FOX HUNT FUN!!!

Want to know how the Fox Hunt went?!!! Sure you do! Here’s the scoop!

KQ4FRB snuck out of the Playground Clubhouse and eluded detection. Traversing multiple streets, roadways, and avenues, she made her way to the top secret location [although public by nature (pun indented)]. Once there, she communicated it was a go for the hunt of the transmitter hidden in plain sight, somewhere in the Beautiful Downtown area of the City of Fort Walton Beach!

Out of the shack and into the cars the hams and guests then went! Grabbing their Yagi’s and signal detection gear. After the roar of a faint tone they separated ways to triangulate and isolate areas where the transmission was to be stronger. Arriving at areas where they thought it might be, they swept narrow and wide which made them flee.

Moving throughout the city, watching the meters and listening for the tones, they adjusted their squelches on multiple radios. Using harmonics they zeroed right in and found the elusive Fox securing a win! Even non-hams played along and found the transmission, but not before KI4ZER and his guest Derrick, securing the win! N2XU was next with his friend Steve, and little did they know, KQ4FRB had a trick up her sleeve! Once he was close, she had DJ raise the antenna from a few feet to above the trees! Now N2XU was puzzled and asked for clues from me! Gave him one we did but it only puzzled him more until finally, N2XU arrived and could celebrate once more!

If you did not participate you missed a great Fox Hunt! Following the event, we went by AA0EU’s and had ourselves a brat and dog BBQ!

Be sure to stay tuned for more events like this that you wont want to miss!

The 2024 Holiday Party

On a balmy December evening in Fort Walton Beach, Florida, the Playground Amateur Radio Club transformed Angler’s Beachside Grill into a festive hub of camaraderie and connection. The sun dipped below the horizon, casting a golden glow over the ocean, while inside, the air buzzed with excitement as members gathered for their annual holiday party.

As club members and fellow amateur radio operators along with other guests arrived, they were greeted by the tantalizing aroma of seafood and spices wafting from the kitchen. The restaurant’s second floor was adorned with holiday decorations—twinkling lights, garlands, and  pleasant smiles! Laughter and cheerful chatter filled the room as friends reunited, sharing stories from their latest radio adventures. DJ, the club president, welcomed everyone. “I’m thrilled to see so many familiar faces tonight! Let’s celebrate our shared passion for amateur radio and the friendships we’ve built over the years!”

The evening kicked off with a delicious buffet featuring local seafood and chicken dishes and holiday favorites. As members filled their plates, conversations flowed freely about recent hamfests, new equipment, and upcoming contests. After dinner, it was time for a presentation of Ham of the year! The winner from the North Okaloosa Amateur Radio Club was Mike, W4BZM! The winner from the Playground Amateur Radio Club was DJ, KI4ZER! Another presentation, held in close concert unfolded as Frank, W4RH was awarded as the Ham of the Century! Another highlight of the evening: a “Secret Santa Gift Exchange” session where gifts were exchanged and fun was had by all!

As the clock approached seven o’clock, DJ said “To friendship, connection, and community! May we continue to share our love for amateur radio and spread joy wherever we go!”. The warmth of camaraderie filled the room as stories were shared and laughter echoed off the walls. As members began to say their goodbyes, it was clear that this holiday party had been more than just an event; it had been a celebration of connection—both through radio waves and human hearts. Walking out into the cool night air, the area amateur radio operators felt grateful for their commitment and involvement into this great hobby. The glow of festive lights behind illuminated the pathway to their homes—a reminder that no matter how far apart they might be physically, they were all connected through their shared love for amateur radio and their commitment to community spirit. Thus concluded another successful holiday party for Amateur Radio—a night filled with laughter, connection, and hope for many more adventures ahead in the vibrant world of radio communications!

Thank you for all who attended and many more to all who are involved in Amateur Radio you are the reason there is so much activity and as we continue to operate in concert, we inspire generations to come!

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! -DJ, KI4ZER

What is SATERN?

The Salvation Army Team Emergency Radio Network (SATERN) is a globally recognized program that leverages the skills of amateur radio operators to provide vital communication during disasters. Established in 1988, SATERN has evolved into an essential component of The Salvation Army’s emergency response efforts, facilitating communication between disaster sites and the organization’s posts worldwide.

History and Development

  • Founding: SATERN was officially founded on June 25, 1988, following discussions among members of the Salvationist Amateur Radio Operators Fellowship (SAROF) about improving emergency communications. Its first significant test occurred during Hurricane Gilbert later that year.
  • Growth: Over the years, SATERN has expanded its reach internationally, with operators now active in regions including Europe, the Caribbean, Central and South America, and Southeast Asia.

Operational Framework

  • Volunteer Network: SATERN is composed of volunteer amateur radio operators from diverse backgrounds, open to individuals of any or no religious affiliation.
  • Communication Modes: The network utilizes various communication technologies, including VHF/UHF and HF bands, Morse code, and digital modes. This versatility allows SATERN to adapt to different disaster scenarios effectively.

Key Contributions

SATERN has played a critical role in numerous disaster responses:

  • Hurricane Katrina (2005): The network managed over 20,000 health and welfare inquiries during this catastrophic event.
  • Joplin Tornado (2011): SATERN units provided essential communications and assisted in distributing food, water, and medical care to affected individuals.
  • International Engagements: SATERN has been involved in global emergencies, including the 1999 Turkey earthquake and various hurricanes like Florence and Michael.

Recent Developments

  • Technological Advancements: In recent years, SATERN has focused on modernizing its operations. This includes integrating digital messaging systems and satellite communications to enhance its effectiveness during disasters
  • International Nets: In June 2022, SATERN launched an international Single Side Band (SSB) Net on 14.325 MHz to coordinate communications during emergencies alongside other networks like the Hurricane Watch Net.

Conclusion

The Salvation Army Team Emergency Radio Network stands as a testament to the power of volunteerism and technology in disaster response. By providing crucial communication links during emergencies, SATERN not only aids in immediate relief efforts but also plays a vital role in reconnecting families and relaying essential information to communities around the globe.
